Attention to Detail: Nightmare Stories

rm -rf

If you’ve ever wondered how to destroy an entire company with four letters and a dash, a certain Mr. Marsala will soon be giving seminars on the subject. As someone wrote in response to his technical query on a public forum, “you just nuked your entire company.” He wanted to know how to recover his web hosting company after accidentally running a Bash script with “rm -rf {foo}/{bar}” in it. Unfortunately

The “rm” tells the computer to remove; the r deletes everything within a given directory; and the f stands for “force”, telling the computer to ignore the usual warnings that come when deleting files.

Thou shalt commit

Still, my favorite goof of all time, above dropping the “a” in “One small step for man,” is the “Wicked Bible” from 1631. It accidentally instructed readers to commit adultery!
